Malongo - Angola

Created by Geraldine 8 years ago
I worked with Dom up to 2002 in Malongo, Angola. Dom was such a gentleman and a real character. We used to love to hear his exploits when he came back to work. He was the true adventurer. I am sure there are very few countries he has not been to.

Dom had tried several times to participate in the London Flora Marathon. We were so thrilled for him when he finally got to do it.

There was a great running group in Malongo. I was the at the back of the pack when it came to running. Dom couldn’t run as slow as I could on the 5k runs. So to keep me company (or really to make sure I didn’t stop off at the production garage for lift back!) he used to zigzag over and back along the route and chat all the way. I actually managed to run a couple of 10ks and made it to the top of Kilimanjaro for which I will be forever grateful.

I was also there when medical had an evening and which 3 people got malaria. Poor Dom being one of them. The chap got very little sympathy from the rest of us, appearing out a few days later looking very weak and pale.

Dom was a person that was always cheerful and always had a story to tell. There were many fun times at the back of telecoms, many a rugby match argued over, (we had all the nationalities to nearly start our own competition!). There was such a comradery with the Malongo group that it was just like family away from home.

Dom, I am sure we will all meet again someday. May you Rest in Peace gentle Sir.
