My history of Dom.

Created by Julian 8 years ago
I first met Dom in the early 1980’s when he was involved in commissioning a digital PABX in Lagos, Nigeria. While I went off on leave, he took over my apartment; took over my Volkswagen Passat and took to bed a secretary of the British High Commission that I was cultivating for myself! Ahh! That’s Dom! But we became good friends in spite of that and laughed about it many times. We seemed to have followed each other around the world with our telecommunication exploits. He came out to Baiji, Iraq in the mid 1980’s to install and commission a couple of digital PABXs. He was later recalled to Iraq to teach digital switching to the Iraqi Railway engineers. I had refused to do it saying that we had an expert in our own department, Dom, who was more capable than me in that field. He wasn’t very happy about it though as it was a loss of his last serious rugby season. But there was lots of ‘hashing’ and plenty of beer to be had. I think he forgave me. He was there for quite a few months all in all.
A few months later we were both in Bangladesh together, first Chittagong for a few months, then Dhaka for the rest of the 3+ year term. Plenty more hashing and still even more amber nectar. It was usually cans of Fosters. In 1991 I was married in Dhaka and Dom was my best man.
We both left GEC after Bangladesh and Dom was instrumental in getting me a job with Tubedale. We ended up in Algeria for almost a year but it became too dangerous for foreigners to stay there. But, again, there was hashing and beer and Dom became quite partial to the local red wine - we drank many a bottle. That was the last time we worked together but we have always kept in touch or visited each other. The last time was his visit to Manila for Christmas 2010/New Year 2011 where we had a grand time enjoying the Philippines and meeting family and friends. See the photographs.
As I said in another post:
I have know Dom for over thirty years and he has in that time been my engineer, my friend, my laughter, my dining partner, my drinking partner and my best man.
Farewell my friend may you Rest In Peace. God bless you.
Your old mate Julian Sambrook
